HARRISBURG -- State lawmakers continue to toss up unprecedented proposals to balance the budget before the June 30th filing deadline.
Freshman Representative Jim Christiana of Beaver County says selling the governor's mansion won't solve the $1.3 billion budget deficit, but would prove to residents that state officials are serious about "tightening their belts." The 33-room Georgian mansion on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg has been appraised at $1.7 million, with an annual upkeep of $1.1 million.
Governor Rendell disagrees with the idea, saying the residence is cost-effective in that it's used for large meetings and public events.
