PSU President Rodney Erickson Responds to NCAA Sanctions

By: Brian Thompson
Updated: July 23, 2012

Penn State President Rodney Erickson responded to the NCAA sanctions on Monday, issuing the following statement:

"The tragedy of child sexual abuse that occurred at our University altered the lives of innocent children. Today, as every day, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims of Mr. Sandusky and all other victims of child abuse.

Against this backdrop, Penn State accepts the penalties and corrective actions announced today by the NCAA. With today's announcement and the action it requires of us, the University takes a significant step forward.

The NCAA ruling holds the University accountable for the failure of those in power to protect children and insists that all areas of the University community are held to the same high standards of honesty and integrity.

The NCAA also mandates that Penn State become a national leader to help victims of child sexual assault and to promote awareness across our nation. Specifically, the University will pay $12 million a year for the next five years into a special endowment created to fund programs for the detection, prevention and treatment of child abuse. This total of $60 million can never reduce the pain suffered by victims, but will help provide them hope and healing.

The NCAA penalty will also affect the football program. There is a four-year ban on all post-season games, including bowl games and the Big Ten Championship game, and a future reduction in the number of football scholarships that can be granted. We are grateful that the current student athletes are not prevented from participation because of the failures of leadership that occurred. Additionally the NCAA has vacated all wins of Penn State football from 1998-2011.

We also welcome the Athletics Integrity Agreement and the third-party monitor, who will be drilling into compliance and culture issues in intercollegiate athletics, in conjunction with the recommendations of the Freeh Report. Lastly a probationary period of five years will be imposed.

It is important to know we are entering a new chapter at Penn State and making necessary changes. We must create a culture in which people are not afraid to speak up, management is not compartmentalized, all are expected to demonstrate the highest ethical standards, and the operating philosophy is open, collegial, and collaborative.

Since receiving Judge Freeh's preliminary recommendations in January, the University has instituted several reforms. Today we accept the terms of the consent decree imposed by the NCAA. As Penn State embarks upon change and progress, this announcement helps to further define our course. It is with this compass that we will strive for a better tomorrow.

Penn State will move forward with a renewed sense of commitment to excellence and integrity in all aspects of our University. We continue to recognize the important role that intercollegiate athletics provides for our student athletes and the wider University community as we strive to appropriately balance academic and athletic accomplishments. Penn State will continue to be a world-class educational institution of which our students, faculty, staff and alumni can be justifiably proud."

Mr. Erickson and the PSU board of directors area bunch cowards. First of all, In 1998 the PSU police and the DA investigated this and found not enough evidence to convict Sandusky. So tell me how the DA new and the board of directors didn't know. Second, the freeh report against coach Paterno is hearsay. Third, the BOD of Penn State are hiding and cowering behind JoePa. The BOD knew more than what they are saying. They are letting JoePa take all the blame. I think the truth would be spoken if JoePa was still alive.

READ THIS!!!!!!FREEH DISCREDITED!!!!!ARE BEYOND REPROACH Reply Ex-FIFA Presidential Candidate Has Ban Annulled and How It Connects to Penn St. By Frank Wagner (Featured Columnist) on July 19, 2012 2,339reads Use your %u2190 %u2192 (arrow) keys to browse more storiesNext It's not often that the worlds of football and futbol (or soccer, if you would) collide, but today's news may be one of those times. Last year, FIFA (the international governing body of soccer) was preparing for its presidential elections when controversy struck. Just a few weeks away from the election, Qatari Mohammed Bin Hammam, the former president of the Asian Football Confederation and challenger to the widely disliked incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter, was accused of corruption. After a quick investigation, Bin Hammam was found to have bribed FIFA's ethics committee with gifts to the tune of $1 million. Bin Hammam was subsequently banned from FIFA for life, leaving the door open for Blatter to win the election unopposed. Does that sound slightly fishy? Well today, the Court of Arbitration of Sport (the highest power in international sporting matters) overturned the ban FIFA had imposed on Bin Hammam and nullified the findings of the investigation into the Qatari (per ESPN). In fact, the court said of the investigation (from Business Week): It is a situation of "case not proven", coupled with concern on the part of the panel that the FIFA investigation was not complete or comprehensive enough to fill the gaps in the record. So what does this have to do with American football, you ask? The connection lies in the investigation into Mohammed Bin Hammam and, moreover, who ran it: former FBI director Louis Freeh. If that name sounds familiar, Freeh is the same man who ran the investigation into Joe Paterno and the Penn State football scandal. In fact, it is Freeh's report that is being treated as the most damning evidence in the case against Paterno's legacy. In it, Freeh says of the case: Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and welfare of Sandusky's child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State. The most powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children who Sandusky victimized. Other than Paterno's family, Freeh's report has been treated as unquestionable fact?an understandable reaction. After all, the author's former position in the FBI makes his findings and thoughts fairly reliable. But what about his findings in the Bin Hammam case? What about the fact that the Swiss Court of Arbitration found his investigation of the case to provide "insufficient evidence" to support that same investigation's conclusion? One thing is clear: Whether or not Freeh's findings in the Bin Hammam case were misguided or not does not affect the facts and quality of his report on the Penn State scandal and Joe Paterno's legacy. However, it should probably make the "Freeh Report" at least a little less than unassailable

Mr. Erickson who is now raping innocent children if not for you, NCAA and the Big 10. Why is it the children and student athletes of today are being punished for what adults did 13-years ago. What about the student athletes that busted their humps winning football games for a university that in an instant the president accepts this with no thoughts or feelings of what they went through all for the purpose of removing wins from Joe Paterno. You Mr. Erickson, the Board of Trustees, and the Governor of PA are just as guilty as Jerry Sandusky for molesting our children its just being done in a different way. You should be ashamed of yourself after promising transparency and then lying and sneaking all to hurt the name of Joe Paterno and his family. Shame on you. I will not support Penn State again. Yes, I do feel bad for the children who suffered at the hands of Jerry Sandusky however he is getting off pretty mild in comparison to what the innocent victims known as student athletes are getting. You are a disgrace to the university and should step down immediatley.
