Joe's Resort Review:
I've always believed that Tussey Mountain is the Rodney Dangerfield of local ski resorts. Some people knock the resort as small, but when I lived in State College, I skied there often. And if it was closer to my house, I would ski there often again. And when people ask me why, I would give them the same answer I did back then: Because it's there and it's better than not skiing.
It's been a while since I've been to Tussey. I have to honestly say that I have not been back since I've become a fairly good skier, so it's my plan to make it back in the near future and get a new perspective. Tussey Mountain is best suited for people to get frequent, economical, and affordable skiing. For a large portion of the population of central Pennsylvania, this is the closest resort. It's the best means to get out on the board or skis often and have a good time with friends after work. It will also keep you fresh between ski trips to other destinations.
The mountain does not have the largest vertical or a plethora of slopes, but their 7 slopes offer a wide variety of options. It's a nice place to learn with a good beginner area and offers a couple of gentle slopes for the novices. For those who need more of a challenge, the mountain does have some real steep, but short stretches on upper Tuscarora and Shamokin.
Being the local resort to Penn State offers its advantages to this resort. The influx of people from the university, along with physical education classes allows for Tussey to assemble a nice team of employees. They have a great ski school and I've heard their terrain park has some great features. They do take snowmaking seriously, and do as well as the climate allows.
Lastly, this is one of the most affordable places to ski. They are always specials including the famous 2 for 1 special on Mondays for the students. In fact, they try to have a special every night of the week which means that you can always ski for a good price.
What's new this season:
- Five new features for their terrain park which may double its size.
Joe's Favorite Slope:
When I skied Tussey, I wasn't that good of a skier. But I do have some great memories on Utah.
