Joe's Resort Review:
Whitetail is the newest, and probably the least known, asset to Central Pennsylvania. This resort opened in the 1990s near Mercersburg and has been growing ever since. It is the closest resort for the southeastern part of the WTAJ viewing area and is a favorite to many regular skiers from the DC area. In fact, if you prefer to avoid the crowds, you may want to slate this as a midweek destination.
This resort is best for the intermediate to advanced skier who is looking to try new terrain. Whitetail has one of the larger verticals in the region with a 935 foot drop. It has 21 trails with more of an accent on the intermediate to advanced difficulty. Only 6 if the 21 slopes are ranked as easier so it may be better to get your ski legs in order before heading to this resort. But once you can make comfortable turns, there is surprisingly nice terrain. It offers night skiing, but again, can be a bit icier at night compared to earlier in the day.
The resort has snowmaking on 100% of its trails and is not afraid to make the snow. In fact it kind of needs it. During a typical midseason, this resort offers as good of snow as many others. The mountain is great, but the southern exposure can take its toll later in the season or during midwinter warm spells. This means that you need to get your skiing in before too late in the season and dry to avoid those thaw periods. By the time March rolls around, the sun angle can eat away the snow and you may lose your chance if you wait too long.
