In so many ways, Joeseph Neary likes to make everyone around him feel comfortable. He's in charge of heating and air conditioning at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona.
That includes air for issolation rooms, and venting infectious diseases. That means lives are on the line.
Joe does take things seriously. In his previous job, Joe dealt with life and death on the front lines. He was a soldier for 10 years. He helped teach soldiers in Iraq how to defend their country. After car bombings, shrapnel and a sniper attack, he suffered severe injuries. Among many other honors, he's earned the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Now he's in Altoona, raising a family.
Using the VA computer system, he communicates with doctors about medication, surgery options and rehab. War has taken a toll. But his attitude and willingness to help are inspiring.

For more than a year, Joe has been growing his hair out to make a wig for a friend in need.
Joe says he's thrilled to give back, and work at a place that honors and cares for veterans.
Joe will be honored at the upcoming Armed Forces Day in May outside the Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona.
