ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - The Altoona Regional Health System is moving closer to an affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

The board of directors of Altoona Regional and its parent corporation has signed a non-binding letter of intent to pursue the affiliation.

If approved, the deal would make Altoona Regional part of the Pittsburgh based UPMC Network which is described as a ten billion dollar global health enterprise.

Union workers have in the past expressed concerns over how an affiliation could affect employment at Altoona Regional.
