ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Some of the coldest weather of the season is moving in.  That means some very busy days and nights for the people who repair and maintain home heating systems.  With the wind picking up and the temperatures continuing to fall, this surge in business in not expected to end until there is a break in the weather.

If you have a problem with your heating or plumbing system that requires some professional help, you may find your self waiting your turn.  Heating technicians are spending a lot of time on emergency calls brought about by heating systems suddenly shutting down.

Everything from blocked air vents, malfunctioning or broken equipment and even dirty air filters can cause a home owner or business to lose their heat.   Professionals say many of those problems could be easily avoided if they are discovered before the frigid temperatures hit.

Frozen pipes can be another big problem that comes to light when temperatures drop to their lowest point of the season. Often those problems can be traced to how a home is constructed and a lack of proper insulation.

For workers who have to be out in the cold as part of their jobs, they have their own challenges when the mercury drops. Key among them is how to dress for the conditions. Some people who have to be out in the cold for long periods of time say that dressing in layers is their key to coping.  That way they can adjust as the weather or conditions change.
