EMPORIUM, CAMERON COUNTY - Andrew Zimmer of Emporium was shoveling snow when he noticed the apartment building across the street from his home was on fire.

" Just then a girl came out with a small child said someone else was inside" he said.

His neighbors, Scott Knarr, Ronald Hammersley, and off duty state trooper Brian Harmon each took turns trying to save 28 year old bed ridden Krista Losey.

"You could only stand the smoke so long (and ) the ceiling kept dropping as far as the smoke" said Hammersley.

"Heavy black smoke" said Zimmer.

"We knew we couldn't take too many more turns. Everybody was already coughing" Hammersley adds.

It was the last time anyone would be able to go inside and it was Zimmer's turn.

"I went in and got down on the floor and looked across the floor and I could see the hospital bed wheel shining and I just made a beeline for that and reached onto the bed and felt her foot" he said.

He swooped her up and walked towards the door where officers and the other men met them.

They say two minutes later the first floor of the apartment went up in flames.

-"We're standing there and we all look back at the house and flames are shooting out of the door we were all going in and out of" said Hammersley.

" I didn't know what kind of condition she was in I was just glad we made it out the door" said Zimmer.

She is now recovering in a Pittsburgh Burn Center. No one else was hurt. The men are considered heroes.

"Seemed like the right thing to do" said Zimmer.

"I'm not a hero at all. I just tried" said Hammersley.

The community also thanks the 3 volunteer fire departments that kept the flames from spreading.
The building is a total loss.
