Plenty of Precipitation, Not Much Snow

Even with the recent rainfall and Sandy at the end of October, Altoona could be on track for a wetter-than-normal year. Seven of the first eight days in December have seen rainfall, and we'll have more in the first half of next week.

The rain Friday lasted through the morning before an afternoon break, and picked up again just before the evening commute began. In total before the rain stopped just after 3 a.m. Saturday morning, about half an inch of rain was recorded. That constitutes the vast majority of rainfall recorded this month.

According to our records, Altoona was about an inch ahead on rainfall for the year going into December. Rain is in the forecast for the first half of next week, but temperatures will still be above normal.

Temperatures will be above normal for most of the week, but cooling Tuesday combined with a cold front leaving the region, and there is a possibility of snow at higher elevations. The main problem is that colder air isn't pushing into Pennsylvania when the moisture is. It's this combination that, when it arrives, will help provide us with some snow to get the nearly 6" of snow that is typical of December.

There are three full weeks left in the month, and long-range forecasts for the weekend of December 14-16 indicate the potential for that combination of cooler air and moisture. The weather team is going to keep an eye on this potential for rain and snow next weekend.
