ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - The need for food assistance for the economically disadvantaged in the Altoona area seems to be growing this holiday season. That's the conclusion of the people who put on the annual Salvation Army pre-Thanksgiving dinner.

There was a full house in the gymnasium of the Salvation Army Citadel on Sixth Avenue in Altoona.   All 120 seats were filled shortly after the door opened at 11 a.m. for the annual pre-Thanksgiving meal. Many of those taking part were grateful for the food.

Those who gathered were given a traditional turkey dinner will all sorts of trimmings. The meal got rave reviews from many.  The food was prepared and served with the help of about 50 volunteers many from the Hollidaysburg Junior High School.

Some of these people who turned to the Salvation Army this year said tough economic times were behind their participation.  Salvation Army Captain David Means say it appears the need for help in the community really is going up.  In his estimation, there has been an increase of about 15 to 20 percent this year for the services and assistance provided by the Salvation Army.

To help meet those needs in the community, the people in charge of the Salvation Army dinner are already planning another  community holiday meal for late December.
