Penn State food scientists say diabetics may want to add a new beverage to their diet.

Drinking green tea with starchy food may help keep blood sugar from spiking. Scientists at University Park say mice fed an antioxidant found in green tea  and corn starch had a significant reduction in blood sugar spikes.

Researchers say the antioxidant was most effective when was used with corn starch. This may mean that green tea could help diabetics control  rises in blood sugar that typically occur when they eat starchy foods. The dose of the green tea extract fed to mice equals about one-and-a-half cups of green tea for a human.
