PSU Wrestling Competes at Annual Intrasquad Dual

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 1, 2012 - The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team hosted its annual Intrasquad Dual at Rec Hall and showcased many new faces at the event.  Over 2,000 fans witnessed 12 bouts, including three matches at 133.

Sophomore Matt Brown (West Valley City, Utah), ranked No. 5 nationally at 174, got a first period pin in his match, pinning James Frascella (Carmel, Ind.) at the 1:49 mark.  Two-time All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 184, posted a 21-4 technical fall (5:59) over talented true freshman Wes Phipps (Grove City, Pa.).

True freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Latrobe, Pa.) posted a 13-5 major over Cameron Kelly (Pittsford, N.Y.) at 133 and red-shirt freshman Jordan Conaway (Abbottstown, Pa.) got a 5-1 win over Frank Martellotti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at 133 as well.  Nate Morgan (McCook, Neb.) posted a 6-4 win over Mike Waters (Advance, N.C.) at 133, too.

Senior Bryan Pearsall (Lititz, Pa.) notched a 4-2 win over true freshman Zack Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) and senior Derek Reber (Lewisburg, Pa.) got a 4-1 decision over Kyle Moran (Oxford, Pa.) in two 141-pound match-ups.  Senior James English (York, Pa.) posted a 5-1 win over Seth Beitz (Mifflintown, Pa.) at 149 and James Vollrath (Richboro, Pa.) downed Rex Lutz (Easton, Pa.) 5-3 at 165.

Andrew Church (Erie, Pa.) posted a 4-0 win over Brandon Phillips (Timonium, Md.) at 174 and sophomore Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.), red-shirting this year, was impressive with a 20-8 win over Scott Syrek (Chester Springs, Pa.) at 197.  Sophomore transfer Jimmy Lawson (Tom's River, N.J.) posted a 3-2 win over Jon Gingrich (Wingate, Pa.) at heavyweight in the evening's final bout.

Four of Penn State's five returning All-Americans did not compete at the Intrasquad as they will trek to Washington, D.C., for the 2012 NWCA All-Star Classic on Saturday, Nov. 3.  The event, already sold out at American University's Bender Arena starting at 7:30 p.m. Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.) will compete at 125, Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) at 157, David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) at 165 and Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) at 197.
