JUNIATA VALLEY, HUNTINGDON COUNTY - Next Monday and Tuesday could leave Central Pennsylvanians breaking out the shovels and snow tires.

A combination of cold temperatures and the movement of tropical storm Sandy have some local authorities already making winter weather preparations in the event of snowfall.

"We could see that system moving along the coast line as we move into the late weekend and early next week," said WTAJ meteorologist Regina Miller. "There is a good chance that the storm gets pulled closer to the coastline. If this happens, it can spell more trouble for us in central Pennsylvania. This second scenario would bring a wind swept and cold rainfall to the region that will also bring snow to the higher elevations"

"We have heard there's some possibility there's going to be snow next week," said Tara Callahan-Henry, a PennDOT spokesperson. "We're ready for it if it does."

Since PennDOT did not have to use much of its road salt during last year's mild winter, it has been able to focus attention on the plows.

"We've been going through each of our counties, going through and doing equipment inspections," she said. "Making sure all of our equipment is ready and working in order."

School districts are also preparing as the winter months approach.

"We have to really jump into high gear and make sure we have all our stuff ready for call off if we have to," said Juniata Valley Superintendent David Christopher.
