Digital emoticons celebrated their 30th birthday today. Professor Scott Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh has the honor of creating the digital smiley faces. Back in 1982 the first smiley face made up of a colon, a hyphen and a parenthesis appeared on the internet sent in an email by professor Fahlman. Since then emoticons have developed into a whole alphabet of different symbols and emotions and are used by people on many different digital devices.
