Kids Need to Cut Back on Salt

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: September 17, 2012
Kids are eating too much salt and it has experts concerned. The Centers for Disease Control says children are consuming as much salt in their diets as adults.

Extra salt is linked with higher blood pressure, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. It's recommended that we eat no more than one  teaspoon of salt a day, or 2300 milligrams. But of the more than six thousand kids in the study,  most ate nearly a thousand milligrams more than that.
