The number of West Nile Virus cases is up about 25% this past week. The Centers for Disease Control says nearly 2,000 cases have been reported so far this year and 87 people have died.

As was true last week, more than 70% of the cases have been reported from six states: Texas, South Dakota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Louisiana. Texas is the hardest hit with 888 cases. Nearly 45% of all cases have been reported from Texas.

The only states where you won't file any West Nile mosquitoes--Alaska and Hawaii. Scientists hope the numbers eventually show the epidemic peaked in mid to late August.
