With that in mind, it is important for motorists to remain watchful for school buses and children that will be on the roadway once the school year begins. In addition, drivers should be cognizant of road signs such as school zones, speed limits, school bus stop ahead; and also pay special attention for school bus lights when traveling near a school bus.
Troopers will be monitoring the highways and school speed zones to ensure that we get the school year off to a safe start.
As a reminder, the PA Vehicle Code relating to school bus approach and school zones state:
DUTY OF APPROACHING DRIVER WHEN RED SIGNALS ARE FLASHING.--The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking any school bus stopped on a highway or traffic way shall stop at least ten feet before reaching the school bus when the red signal lights on the school bus are flashing and the side stop signal arms are activated. The driver shall not proceed until the flashing red signal lights are no longer actuated. The driver shall not resume motion of the vehicle until the school children who may have departed from the bus have reached a place of safety.
SCHOOL ZONES.--When passing through a school zone, no person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour.
We are asking motorists to obey these laws to help keep our children safe this school year.
