About one in 88 children is  being diagnosed with autism or a  related disorder, but there are no FDA approved drugs to treat the conditions.

Now, a clinical trial across the country aims to find a medication that may relieve  one of the major symptoms, a problem with social interactions and communication.

Children 6 to 12 are being recruited for a study of Memantine, a drug used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's Disease. Researchers say it targets a brain chemical implicated in Autism.

Dr. David Posey is with the ConnectMe Clinical Research Program.  He says, "this is a new drug drug, an investigational drug basically targeting core social impairment and communication impairment."

Dr. Posey says researchers hope the drug improves  eye contact, social awareness, and communication. In children with Autism, Asperger's syndrome, and a disorder called Pervasive Development Disorder.

The closest study site in our region is in the Philadelphia area. For more information on the study go to www.connectmetrial.com or call 1-877-900-8735.
