AMA Supports Mammogram at 40

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: June 20, 2012
A national doctors' group has weighed in on the controversy over when a woman should get her first mammogram.

The American Medical Association has updated its policy on breast cancer screenings. The AMA recommends that, starting at  40, all women should be "eligible" for screening mammography.
The policy also supports insurance coverage for this screening, but it doesn't say  that every women "should get" routine screening, just that she should be eligible.

That position  goes against a 2009 report by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force that screening mammography isn't necessary for women under 50.
