GRAND LAKE, Colo.  - The IWLCA has named Saint Francis University's Catherine Helming (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) the recipient of the Division I Community Awareness Award for the 2011-12 year.  The four-year member of the lacrosse program was among three women in the country - one in each division - recognized for their contributions to the community throughout the year.

Helming, who wrapped up her collegiate lacrosse career this spring, helped raise over $5,000 for various organizations, including the Zack Hinish Foundation, breast cancer awareness, and Children's Cancer Recovery. She played a key role in coordinating the Second Annual Gatorade Pong Tournament at Saint Francis, providing a late night alternative activity for the campus student-body to take part in and also raise money for the Hinish Foundation. She helped launch the Think Pink Push-Up Showdown sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in January, raising money for breast cancer awareness as part of the annual Think Pink Women's Basketball game.

The midfielder also coordinated Saint Francis' efforts in the annual Northeast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Penny War, during which student-athletes at NEC schools raised money for the Children's Cancer Recovery Foundation.

Helming played a crucial role in the production of the sixth annual Alicia Richardson Sports 4 Kids Day in March. Each year, students in kindergarten through sixth grade from the surrounding area are invited to the University for this free event with t-shirts, pizza and prizes distributed to all participants. The kids have an opportunity to play with members of a Red Flash team at each of the sport specific stations.

Helming helped to organized the first Mr. SFU Male Pageant in April, focusing on raising money for the Hinish Foundation and also spent many hours during the year volunteering with various organizations on campus, including the Dorothy Day Center and John Paul Manor.
