Mount Aloysius Center Under Construction

CRESSON, CAMBRIA COUNTY - Work on a major construction project is officially underway on the campus of Mount Aloysius College.  The people in charge of the Northern Cambria County College say their new convocation center will be a huge asset for the region.

The early arrival of spring this year is why construction crews have already done a lot of site preparation work on this project.  Still the official start of construction is a big deal to supporters of Mount Aloysius College.

Campus officials and other community leaders backing this project say the new multi-purpose building is going to make a significant difference to the college and the surrounding area.   The athletic, convocation and wellness center is designed to benefit not just about Mount Aloysius College but the surrounding community as well.

College officials say the new building will help expand their campus and provide a better college experience for the 1600 Mount Aloysius Students. But because of the expense involved, College leaders said they needed significant state support before they could move from the design to construction of the $25 million dollar building.  That came in the form of a $10 million redevelopment assistance capital improvement grant   from the state.

That capital grant from Harrisburg was obtained with the help of Senator John Wozniak who says that investing state money in this private college should pay off. One of those significant benefits for the region will be the estimated 250 jobs created for the next two years while the  new  athletic , convocation,  and fitness center is being constructed.

The new convocation center will is scheduled for completion in mid- 2014. Campus leaders say it should help draw plenty of new students to Mount Aloysius College.
