STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Imagine running part of your home or school on wind power that's what some middle school students in State College are up to.

Students at Park Forest Middle School used Tuesday's beautiful weather to launch a new wind turbine. The turbine will power three computers inside the school. This project builds off a similar project last March.

At that time, WTAJ caught up with some eighth and seventh graders who were creating a wind turbine and solar panel. The turbine that was installed Tuesday is the second on the school's roof.

Science and math students have been working on this project for five months. Students and a couple teachers had to use all their strength to hoist the turbine, which is about 10 pounds into position.

They made the turbine from scratch using scrap metals and some that needed to be bought.

"We're running out of resources, and we need to do things like this so we can keep having power in the future and this kind of shows that we can do it," said one student.

Bill Hughes, the instructor of the project said he's proud of students and administrators, "because an idea like this is kind of out there and they gave us some elbow room to move around with it and the results have been there."

Teachers at the school say Park Forest Middle has the highest energy efficiency rating in the State College Area School District, because of projects like the wind turbine.
