The nation's leading cancer organizations say rates of death in the United States from all cancers continued to decline between 2004 and 2008.   Some doctors say the news is both encouraging and disappointing because the overall rate of cancer deaths isn't falling enough.

Scientists  say many cancers could be avoided if people didn't smoke, maintained a healthy weight and protected against the sun.  Getting vaccinations can also prevent many cervical and liver cancers.

The report is co-authored by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society.
