The Chamber Agri-Business Committee will help to coordinate guest readers/speakers for grades K-6 from committee members, FFA's, 4-H Clubs, etc. to visit classes, read books and/or speak to classes about agriculture topics, at the teachers' requests.
The Chamber, in conjunction with participating businesses, will sponsor a contest for K-6 graders to promote the significant impact agriculture has on our region:
K & 1st Grades: Coloring Contest
2nd-4th Grades: Poster Contest
5th & 6th Grades: Essay Contest
The theme for the contests will be:
"Agriculture Everyday"
Acclaimed children's book author and illustrator, Elizabeth O. Dullemba has provided the artwork for the coloring contest. More information about her work is available at www.dulemba.com.
The Chamber's Agri-Business Committee will create a judging committee to review entries and choose one "winner" from each grade. The seven winners will each receive an ice cream party in partnership with Allied Milk Producers for their classrooms. Winners will be announced mid-May and ice cream parties scheduled for last few weeks of school.
The Bedford Gazette will partner with us to produce a full-page color ad to showcase the winning submissions, plus sponsor logos, etc. Winners will also be featured as part of an In Community Magazine feature, on the Chamber Website, and displayed in the Chamber's Agri-Business Booth at the Bedford County Fair.
All Bedford County schools, grades K-6 are invited to participate. To schedule a speaker or reader for your class(es), contact Kellie Goodman Shaffer at the Chamber office: 623-2233 or via email
