ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY -- The American Cancer Society hosted two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks in our region for the month of October.

The 12th Annual Central Pennsylvania Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk was held October 1st at Penn State Altoona.

865 registered walkers braved the cold temps and non-stop rain and helped to raise $110,000.
75 breast cancer survivors were honored for fighting the fight and gathered for a group photo in front of the Adler Gym.

The goal of the Altoona is to raise $142,000 dollars.  Teams can fund raise until December 31, 2011.  Breast cancer fighter Dorreen Fogle served as the honorary chair and guest speaker for the walk.

The 1st Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk for Bedford and surrounding areas took place on Saturday October 15th.  Walkers began their 5K fund raising walk at Bedford High School and ended with a mini reception on the front lawn of the Omni Bedford Springs Resort.

500 registered walkers took part in the inagural event.  35 breast cancer fighters and survivors formed a human pink ribbon after the walk.  The goal for the Bedford Making Strides walk was to raise $35,000.  Walking teams have already raised $42,000 and more money is still coming in.  Walkers have until December 31, 2011 to raise money for this year's walk.

Two time breast cancer survivor Dr. Katherine Erlichman served as the chair and guest speaker for the walk.
