It's a year of taking the next step for Penn State's men's and women's lacrosse teams in 2013.
Both squads look to build on breakout seasons.

"There's no reason why a school like Penn State, in women's lacrosse, we shouldn't be routinely ranked in the top 10," PSU women's head coach Missy Doherty says.

That's exactly where Doherty's team finds itself heading into the season - ranked 10th in the nation.
With just four seniors on a team coming off a run to the NCAA second round, Penn State will look for leadership and contributions from some younger players, too.

"Our young players are very good," Doherty says. "So I think we compete well against other teams."

On the men's side, it's a faster game thanks to new NCAA rules.
The 15th-ranked Nittany Lions saw the effect in their opener, an 11-6 win at Michigan.

"Right now there's less involvement from coaches," PSU men's head coach Jeff Tambroni says. "Players make plays. The game has become much more exciting. The other thing that we learned is that you have to play more people. The good thing about having more depth now is just that's what the game is going to transcend into."

The men's team next plays on Sunday, Feb. 17 in Jacksonville against No. 9 Denver University.
The women's team opens its season on Wednesday, Feb. 20 against in-state rival Bucknell.
