The Centers for Disease Control says the percentage of mothers who start and continue breastfeeding is rising.

The number of mothers who started breastfeeding increased more than four percentage points during the last decade. And the number of moms still breastfeeding at six months  hit nearly 45 percent.

Gaps between white and African American mothers are also narrowing.

Pediatricians say breastfed babies are less likely to develop diabetes, or respiratory and ear infections or to die  of SIDS.
