While the 2012 drought in the U.S. was well-recorded, a similar drought lasting since 2005 has been going in the Amazon Rainforest.
According to a release by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the drought there in 2005 caused significant damage to the canopy. While rainfall levels increased over subsequent years, about half the canopy recovered by the time the next drought began in 2010.
The findings released on JPL's website state the same climate phenomenon that caused Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 may have contributed to the drought.
