EBENSBURG, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Cambria County is starting off 2013 more than $6 million in debt.

"We didn't deal with it last year and here we are again not having a plan for a second time on this debt," said Ed Cernic, Cambria County Controller.  "It just puts us behind further and further."

Commissioners closed the Nanty Glo Senior Center and left county positions vacant to reduce costs.

"To help reduce costs one the things we have not been doing it hiring a lot of people," said President Commissioner, Doug Lengenfelder.

Cernic said not hiring for unfilled positions and closing centers is not going to solve the looming debt.

"They've adopted an unrealistic budget, asked departments to cut costs... its making it worse."

Cernic suggests the county shop around for lower interest rates, hold their expenses and become more aggressive in finding additional revenue.

Commissioners are paying about $20,000 a year to offer management classes that is an option for department heads.
