Are Kids Getting Too Much Radiation?

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: December 3, 2012
The results of a new study suggest too many children are getting CT scans and other tests that may be harmful. In the past nine years, the number of children undergoing CT scans, MRIs , X-rays and other imaging procedures has Increased significantly.

Higher radiation tests, like CT scans rose 34 percent during the study.  Imaging procedures with higher amounts of radiation were most frequently performed in the hospital and emergency room settings. The study found the three most common reasons for the scans were abdominal pain, headache and head injury.

Researchers didn't determine how much of the imaging was truly necessary.  The findings raise concern because other studies have linked radiation exposure to increased risk of cancer.

Health experts say parents should question their child's doctor before agreeing to any scan.
