PORTLAND, Maine - Altoona Curve right-handed reliever Vic Black has been added to the Eastern League All-Star squad and will join teammates Ramon Cabrera, Brandon Cumpton and Brock Holt at the Eastern League All-Star Game taking place July 11 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa. It is the first career All-Star selection for Black, who was taken in the first supplemental round (49th overall) of the 2009 draft out of Dallas Baptist University.
Black, 24, is in his first season in Double-A and has taken the level by the horns, entering tonight's game at Binghamton with a 1-1 record, four saves in five tries and one of the league's best ERAs at 1.36. The Amarillo, Texas native hasn't allowed a run this entire month in nine appearances spanning 10 innings. All told, the hard-throwing righty hasn't surrendered a run in his last 10 outings dating back to May 29th (12.0 innings total).
He's also registered at least one strikeout in 23 of his 27 appearances on the mound this season. In total, Black has fanned 42 batters in 33.0 innings of work equating to a 11.45 strikeout/9IP ratio. That strikeout ratio per nine innings for Black is the second-best in the league for any reliever behind Portland's Aaron Kurcz. Opponents have hit just .234 off Black in his appearances this season for the Curve. Entering the season, Black was listed as the 19th-best prospect in the Pirates organization according to Baseball America.
Three of the four Curve All-Star selections (Black, Cabrera and Holt) are all scheduled to participate in the game in Reading on July 11 while Cumpton will still attend but is unable to participate as he will make his a scheduled start two days prior to the game.
