Health experts tell us that calcium helps build strong bones, but a new study suggests that you can get too much of a good thing. Women who take large doses of calcium could be at higher risk for heart disease.

Researchers in Sweden followed more than 61,000 woman for almost 20 years. They found taking calcium on top of a high calcium diet was associated with double the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease.

In the U.S., more than 60 percent of middle aged and older women take calcium supplements to prevent bone fractures. Talk to your doctor before deciding to stop taking calcium.
