EBENSBURG, CAMBRIA COUNTY - As of Thursday it will be against the law in Pennsylvania to throw away certain types of electronic equipment including computers, monitors and televisions.

With some new state mandated recycling regulations about to take effect, the people in charge of some County operated recycling programs say they have seen a significant growth in the amount of old electronic equipment being brought in for recycling.

With the state's new "Covered Device Recycling Act" going into full effect on January 24th, area recyclers are expected to see even more televisions, computers and other obsolete equipment to be coming though their doors.  Because a fee paid by companies that manufacture electronic equipment sold in Pennsylvania will be used to cover part of the cost of county or municipal recycling programs, there's support for the mandatory recycling even if it does require a trip to a County's recycling operation.

Backers of the change say keeping these materials and the heavy metals they contain out of landfills is important to the environment. That's why they believe the new mandatory recycling of electronics is a positive step for state residents.
