HOLLIDAYSBURG. BLAIR COUNTY - The recent birth of a baby girl at the Blair County prison is attracting some attention.

It was during the early morning hours of Saturday November 24th that a female inmate of the jail went into labor in her jail cell.   Prison official say the labor progressed very quickly and the baby was born at the jail before the expectant mother could be rushed to the hospital.

The Company that provides medical care services at the jail says that the nurse reporting for the day shift at the prison was in attendance for the birth along with jail personnel that included the shift medical care liaison.    An ambulance was summoned but arrived after the birth.   Both the mother and the new-born were transported to the Altoona Regional Medical center where they were reported to be in good condition.

Jail personnel say while a birth behind bars is unusual, it does happen on occasion. It is their position that proper procedures were followed in this case and the proper steps were taken once jail employees were notified that the inmate was in labor.
