BEDFORD, BEDFORD COUNTY - A holiday celebration turned tragic Sunday night after a runaway horse drawn carriage drags a man and throws two others.

The night was planned as a holiday tradition. People at the Bedford Springs Resort planned to light up the huge tree donated by a nearby farm, sing carols, and Santa and Mrs. Claus would lead the parade in a horse drawn carriage.

But Ernie Alwine was dragged underneath the carriage. He owned the horse and carriage. He was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center and on to a Pittsburgh Hospital for a head injury.

Alwine's daughter, who was also hurt, was taken to Bedford Hospital along with the Bedford Springs employee who was playing Mrs. Claus.  Santa , a community volunteer, wasn't hurt and met with the kids there.

And while the night turned reflective, organizers lit the tree and carried on what they say will be a tradition.

Monday night Hospital officials listed Alwine in stable condition.
