The 7-and-0 Buckeyes can thank the poll voters for making them Number-1. Ohio State sits atop both the coaches' poll and the Harris poll, which are two of the three components the BCS uses in its standings formula. Ohio State is also the new Number-1 team in the AP Top 25.
South Florida is second in the first BCS standings of the season -- a remarkable accomplishment given the fact the Bulls had never been ranked before this season and only started playing football 11 years ago. Now coach Jim Leavitt's team is in the thick of the national title race.
The final third of a team's BCS grade comes from a compilation of six computer rankings, and that's where the 6-and-0 Bulls scored big. The computers have USF as the top team in the country. They are third behind Boston College in the coaches' and Harris polls, though they are Number-2 in the AP poll by a comfortable margin over BC.
Ohio State tied for fifth in the computer rankings. Boston College is third in the BCS standings, with LSU and
Oklahoma rounding out the top five. The top two teams in the final standings released December 2nd will play in the national title game in New Orleans on January 7th.
