Female smokers are much more likely to die from lung cancer and lung disease than they were 20 or 40 years ago. That's one of the findings from two new studies on smoking in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers also found that if you smoke, your life expectancy is lowered a decade. But if you quit by age 40 you can avoid almost all of the increased risk associated with smoking.

One out of five American adults smoke according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That number is even higher among young adults.
