RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY--- Officers with the Richland Township Police Department are gearing up for their annual Halloween Trick-or-Treat candy handout. This year there's about four thousand pounds of candy to be handed out.
"We enjoy doing this every year," said Sgt. John Herdman, Richland Township Police.
"I don't know how they get so much candy," said UPJ Senior Morgan Maloney. "The tables are always stacked when we come in but we get it done in a few hours."
Local businesses in the area donate money for officers to buy the candy or donate the bags. Students from Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority help pack the candy and the police distribute them to kids during Trick-or-Treat night.
"We started this about 14 years ago," said Herdman. "We had a rash of kidnappings going on across the country... this was a way to help put parents at ease."
Tom Smith has lived in Richland Township his entire life and knew about the police candy handout. He said he appreciates it much more as a parent.
"I knew the program was here growing up and I thought it was great the police were active," said Smith. "As a parent, I really gained appreciation for the program."
Smith's daughter 11-year old daughter MiKayla said she looks forward to getting her bag of candy every Halloween.
"It's really nice of them and it shows they care," said MiKayla.
"It makes you feel good when the kids smile," said Herdman.
Richland Township's Trick-or- Treat night was rescheduled for Saturday November 3, 3012 3-5 p.m.
