Was the 2012 Hurricane Season Defined By Sandy?

Much of the storm coverage during the 2012 Hurricane Season was about Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Isaac during the Republican National Convention, but keep in mind that storms are named alphabetically. Sandy was the 18th of 19 storms this past season.
There were 10 hurricanes in the last season, and only one was categorized as a "major hurricane," and that was Hurricane Michael. Didn't hear of it? That's because the storm stayed in the middle of the Atlantic for the duration of its one-week life.
An article was posted regarding a National Public Radio story in which Greg Jenkins, a professor of atmospheric sciences at Howard University, spoke with NPR's Jon Hamilton about the "busy and head-scratching season." The story is available in audio form, so it can be something you listen to while working on something else.
