Joe's Resort Review:
Hidden Valley and Seven Springs are both extremely close in proximity. You can even see one from the top of the mountain of the other. As you can assume from this close proximity, the natural snowfall is about the same between the two, but the similarity between the two ends there as each has its own flavor and style.
While Seven Springs is the city of skiing, Hidden Valley is that quaint smaller town that you like to visit. This resort is best suited for those skiers looking for more confidence in a smaller and quieter environment. The resort has 38 slopes with a 450 foot vertical drop and 70 skiable acres. There is a variety of terrain, but it is skewed toward the easier. Of the 38 slopes, 11 slopes are rated as easier and 10 as intermediate. They list 5 black diamonds and two double blacks, including the new Cobra Glades. Now I do have to remind folks that the rating system is a comparison of what is at a specific resort. A black at one resort may be a blue at another. Since Cobra is new, I haven't been on it yet, but if you are looking for your first double-black run, I suggest Charger. It's short and not as difficult as you would expect, though if you are not comfortable in bumps or steeps, your time may not have come.
The company running this resort is also being aggressive in making advancements. They have stolen away some good people from other mountains and are making a move in the positive direction. They have made some improvements in their snowmaking and are really trying to market through some great deals in the early season. In fact, this is about the only resort that has offered a deal to ski for free and to get a free lesson. You definitely want to keep checking their web page for such deals. They are also planning on expanding to a new face beyond Charger with additional slopes and a new chair. Though that is still down the road a bit.
Joe's Favorite Slope:
Comet is a great run. It has always had good snow for me and I like to dive off to Barracuda and Viper at times.
