JOHNSTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY - It was just this last May that Corey Shafer graduated from Westmont Hilltop High School.  Since then, he's been pursuing his hockey career.  And just this last week, that career brought him back to Johnstown.

"It's great to be back," said Shafer.  "Playing in my hometown.  I've scored many goals in this arena.  I'm hoping to get at least one here this season."

Shafer began the season in Wichita Falls, Texas.  He played 19 games for the Wildcats, before being traded to the Tomahawks on January 10th.  He joins Cody Boyd as the only local products who play for the team.

"We needed a little spark and a little energy in our lineup," says Tomahawk Assistant Coach Mike Letizia.  "We knew what type of player he was, so we had to make a move. We traded one of our defensemen away to get him.  And we're really happy with him."

Shafer isn't a complete stranger to the team.  Shafer and Letizia have a bit of a connection.

"I actually coached his little brother last year.  I always say he was one of my favorite kids to coach because he was always so receptive to everything I tried to teach him.  From what I can see, Corey's kind of a similar mold.  So we're pretty excited."

So, now that the forward is back in Johnstown, what's his favorite part about being home?

"Seeing my family every day," says Shafer.

And the second best part?

"I love Santo's Pizza.  Bacon Pizza.  It's so good.  Before the game I try to go there.  But I haven't been able to yet."

The Tomahawks host Michigan this Friday, at 7pm at War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.
