ALTOONA, PA (BLAIR COUNTY) -- Two very successful projects involving Altoona Area School District students and employees will result in a $14,477 check presentation to Operation Our Town on Wednesday, April 20, at 12:15 p.m. on the AAHS intramural field. (In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the school fieldhouse.)

Operation Our Town representatives, including Michael A. Fiore, Phil Devorris, Randy Feathers and James Walstrom, are expected to attend and accept the check.

Throughout the winter, 85 five-member teams of Altoona Area High School students, each of which had an adult sponsor, collectively walked more than 50,000 miles as part of the second annual AAHS Goes Global event. In addition to paying a $100 entrance fee, many of the teams raised extra money through pledges and other endeavors.

The AAHS Goes Global teams will complete a ceremonial lap together on Wednesday wearing special t-shirts before they enjoy a variety of games and activities until 2 p.m.

Since January 14, some 220 school district employees were taking part in a separate “Biggest Loser” event. Each participant worked to lose weight by increasing their physical activity levels and changing their eating habits.

Since that initial weigh-in, participating teachers, administrators and non-instructional employees logged onto a website each Friday and recorded their current weights and the total number of exercise miles they logged during the same seven-day period through walking, jogging, cycling, spinning and the like.

Each “Biggest Loser” participant paid a $25 entry fee which kicked off the fund-raising aspect of the competition in which teams were also encouraged to raise extra money for Operation Our Town.

“Biggest Loser” participants collectively lost 2,640 pounds and logged more than 63,400 exercise miles.
