LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, BEDFORD COUNTY -  A number of handguns were stolen from a Bedford County business early on Monday.   The "smash and grab" theft is drawing plenty of attention because a number of guns were apparently stolen.

At midday the Saxton Outdoor Supply store on Raystown Road remained closed as repairs to the building were underway.  It was about 2:30 in the morning when someone used a car to smash out the front door of the business and gain access to the store.

State police say it appears the suspect was able to get away with a number of handguns.  The car used in the break in and burglary was a late 90's or early 2000 Cadillac STS that was either maroon or red according to the State Police. Troopers added that it appears that just one person was involved in the crime.

A joint investigation involving the Pennsylvania State Police and Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Agents is underway.  Because a "substantial" number of handguns are missing, investigators are looking for some help from the public in the effort to try and recover the stolen guns before they get into the hands of other criminals.

The Federal ATF Agents can be reached at 1-800 283-4867 (ATF GUNS).  The Bedford Barracks of the State Police can be reached at 623-6133.
