Reports out of New York suggest that the New York Marathon has been canceled.

The annual race was scheduled for Sunday was canceled on Friday due to the after effects from Superstorm Sandy.

A joint statement from New York city Mayor Michael Blomberg and New York Road Runners president Mary Wittenberg read:

"The Marathon has been an integral part of New York City's life for 40 years and is an event tens of thousands of New Yorkers participate in and millions more watch. While holding the race would not require diverting resources from the recovery effort, it is clear that it has become the source of controversy and division.

The marathon which was first held back in 1970 attracts about 47,000 runners each year, and attracts nearly 2.5 million spectators who line the streets of New York.
