USA Runner Finishes Race With Broken Leg

By: Brian Stalter
Updated: August 9, 2012
US runner Manteo Mitchell broke his leg during the 4x400 relay. Mitchell started running his portion of the relay slower than usual. After 100 meters, he claims he leg began to feel weird. Right after the 200 meter mark, Mitchell heard a snap and collapsed on the track.

Doctors say he broke his left fibula.

That didn't stop Mitchell. Encouraged by his teammates, he got up and kept running. Mitchell said each step brought horrible pain, but he didn't want to let his teammates down.

Because Mitchell didn't quit, the US finished second and qualified for the finals.

The US men have won gold in this event every time they competed since 1976.
