ALTOONA, BLAIR COUNTY - Throughout his roughly 40 minute address, one of the key issues Governor Tom Corbett hit on was education. After two years of massive cuts, the Governor says it's time to spend.
"Now is not the time to be timid in our approach. Now is not the time to cling to old ideas and the status quo. Now is not the time to make big changes and expect small results," Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett says.
Corbett called for $5.5 billion in education funding for early childhood programs thru 12th grade, including an added $100 million to be distributed throughout Pennsylvania schools.
The added funds would increase school budgets by a little more than 1%.
"My budget works to provide our public schools with enrichment funding to help them achieve academic excellence at all grade levels," Corbett says.
After cutting $1 billion dollar from education in the last two years, Democrats say it's not enough.
But Corbett added the expected $1 billion from his plan to privatize Pennsylvania's liquor sales would also go towards education.
"Selling liquor is not a core function of government. Education is," Corbett says.
Governor Corbett's plan also calls for the same amount of funding for state universities, providing tuition rates do not increase for students.
