Inclement Weather Causing Blood Drive Shortages

STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Roadways aren't the only thing affected by wintry weather.

Icy roads and cold temperatures are nothing new for folks here.

"Today was average," Eric Brooks said. "It's not a big snowstorm, so we didn't go into the 24/7 mode, we just stuck to the regular salt crew call outs. We have 12 employees out plowing."

Even with crews working to clear the roadways, some businesses are still suffering.

"If the weather does not allow for patients or donors to get there, then obviously, there's very few blood collected," Eddie Corona, Administrative Director of Laboratories at Mount Nittany Medical Center said.

Forced to cancel several blood drives because of the wintry weather, the Red Cross donation numbers are down already. They worry about what impact that will have on hospital patients, and are even asking hospital employees to donate.

"Elective surgeries may need to be postponed because we want to make sure that there's an adequate blood supply for emergency patients or cancer patients," Corona said.

Corona says if donations don't pick up, those consequences could increase.

"Blood is not something that we can just get off the shelf or manufacture more on an as-needed basis," he said. "It's up to the community to say yes, we're going to give. That's the only way to keep an adequate supply."
