EBENSBURG, CAMBRIA COUNTY---26 constables and a number of tax collectors won't be paid Friday.

Cambria County Commissioners and the County Control acknowledged it's because both offices are trying to "do less with more."  Ed Cernic Jr., County Controller said his department has had a vacant position for 10 weeks causing a back up in payroll.

"Unfortunately that position paid the constables and tax collectors," said Cernic.  "It has gone unfilled and the work they did like paying constables is being left go because we can't get to it right now."

"This position has left him (Cernic) a little short deal with other issues its not to say these people wont get paid," said President Commissioner Doug Lengenfelder.  "His (Cernic) office is trying to get everyone paid and is working hard to figure it out."

Sam Allison has been a constable since 1963, this is the first time he has never received a paycheck.

"It's sad, there is no reason because everyone else got paid but the constables," said Allison.  'This is the first time in my career I have never got paid, it's been late because of monies but never not paid because of payroll."

Allison said he is concerned for the others; especially since constables are considered a vendor for the county and pay all of their own expenses.

"I just hope they work on communication, and get their heads out of the clouds," said Allison.  "I think we'll get paid soon, I hope."
