CRESSON, CAMBRIA COUNTY - An area prison is closing and the community is worried.

Senator John Wozniak confirmed the State Correctional Institute at Cresson is one of two that will be closing their doors. State Prison officials aren't saying much else and people in the Cresson area are worried that one of the town's biggest employers is shutting down.

Sean Moran is the General Manager at Ebensburg Yamaha. A lot of his customers work at SCI Cresson. He says losing those jobs will hurt other businesses like his.

He's not the only one worried about how this will affect the other businesses in town. One man said he sees SCI workers stopping at Cresson gas stations and getting coffee, breakfast, and gas in the mornings.

And a lot of people that talked with WTAJ have friends and family who work at SCI Cresson. They're worried about what is going to happen to them now the Cresson is closing.

Several people who work at SCI Cresson talked with WTAJ, most of them didn't want to go on camera because they don't know what's happening. But they were all upset that no one told them their prison was closing, they found out by watching the news.

There are about five hundred employees at SCI Cresson. Most of them are in some kind of union.
There are about 14 hundred inmates housed there.
SCI Greensburg is also going to close. There are less than a thousand inmates there.
