JENNERSTOWN, SOMERSET COUNTY--- Preschoolers in Somerset County are improving early math and literacy skills with new touch screen tablet computer.

The Learning Lamp implemented the research-based iStartSmart (iSS) computer learning system in its Jennerstown preschool in mid-September.

"They get to choose between three different categories," said Kayla Trexel, Learning Lamp Teacher and Director.  "It introduces colors shape, and patterns."

iSS allows teachers to monitor each child's progress every time he or she logs in, children's skill gaps are readily identified and teachers can make informed instructional decisions that lead to improved efficiencies and outcomes for each child.

"Its similar to an iPad," said Learning Lamp Executive Director Leah Spangler.  "It enables children to work on early literacy and math skills in the classroom along with digital literacy skills."

In September 2012 The Learning Lamp received a $10,000 grant from PNC, "Grow Up Great."  It funded two sets of iSS computers at The Learning Lamp Center for Children in Somerset.
